What would my life be like without music?
I was thinking the other day about how much of a role music plays in my everyday life. Whether it’s in the car on my commute to work, setting the perfect vibes at home in the evenings, or helping me focus while I tackle projects around the house, there’s always a playlist or melodies playing. Music has become such an integral part of my identity, moods, memories, and routines that I can hardly remember what life was like before having constant access to any song I want.
It got me wondering: What would my world feel like without any beats, rhythms, or instruments? How empty and colourless everything would seem. Can you picture leaving the house each morning in silence? No blasting your current favourite tunes to put a bounce in your step and shake off the lingering sounds of your alarm clock. No motivating anthems to pump you up for the day ahead. Just the mundane hum of the engine and tyres on pavement. Pretty boring, right? I depend on finding the perfect playlist to energise me each morning during my commute. Without any beats or lyrics to jam out to, those drives would feel incredibly dreary and uninspiring.

How about making dinner on a quiet weekday night? No dance party-worthy tracks to liven up kitchen prep time. As someone who loves to cook, music is essential for turning it into a fun, carefree activity rather than a chore. No fun, carefree moments of swaying or singing along to familiar lyrics as I chop veggies and stir pots. The same goes for relaxing weekends – no inspirational or cathartic songs to set the perfect ambiance for leisure activities. Everything would feel so sterile and lifeless without an awesome soundtrack. Whether I’m lounging at home or enjoying nature outside, music helps me appreciate moments and experiences to their fullest.
And what about unwinding at the end of a long day? No tunes carefully curated to your current moods as the stresses fade away. Music has become my go-to method for relaxation and self-care. No soothing melodies to sooth my nerves after dealing with traffic or difficult customers at work. No getting swept away by an emotional ballad or lost in a nostalgic melody reminiscent of past experiences. Just…silence. How depressing! Music provides an emotional release like nothing else. Whether I need a good cry or to zone out, certain songs help me process feelings and unwind like magic.

The more I thought about living without any genre of music as an escape or form of expression, the duller everything seemed. Music adds so much emotion, nostalgia, and excitement to everyday moments that could otherwise blend together. It provides richness, texture, and lifelong memories to activities and experiences. Music allows me to fully feel what I’m doing through another medium. I’ve made so many connections with others through our shared love of certain artists over the years. Music festival trips, dance parties at home, and jam sessions in the car are memories I cherish. The soundtrack of my life story would feel incomplete without certain songs peppered throughout different eras.
I depend on music to lift my spirits, calm my mind and complement everything in between. Having the ability to listen to whatever style or artist suits my emotions is a blessing. Not to mention all the memories and connections I have with certain songs from different eras of my life. The soundtrack of my youth would be gone without music in my life. Looking through old playlists and album covers never fails to trigger waves of NOSTALGIA and sentimentality.

It’s crazy to think humans managed for millennia without recorded music at their fingertips. But living without the ability to experience the raw emotion and artistry in a song? The escape, motivation, and expression music provides on a daily basis? I can hardly even fathom how dull, colourless, and one-dimensional life would be. Music has shaped who I am and how I process the world in countless ways. While I could survive physiologically without music, my spirit and psyche would feel incredibly impoverished. Music is beauty, magic, and human experience in its purest form. I’m endlessly grateful to live in a time and place where I have unlimited access to its gifts.
After sharing my personal musical memories and the importance of music, I think it would be fun to open the floor for all of you. Music is so inherently personal – we all have tracks that hold special significance based on our own unique life stories and journeys.

This is a cathartic read. My favourite song of the moment is Superwoman by Alicia Keys. It resonates with the current state of affairs in my life. I have so many more, but for this season, that’s the one!
